How can a Global Citizenship Education initiative on AI defuse social tensions and strengthen intercultural dialogue? In Pamplona, GET Spain successfully concluded the “Fake News Hunters” Youth Action. Implemented on the ground by our project partner, the NGO Coopera, this initiative empowered local youth to step up as agents of change, actively addressing social tensions and strengthening intercultural coexistence in neighborhoods where social integration faces hurdles.
Participants to the initiative began by identifying and analysing fake news, rumours and discriminatory messages spread through social media and other digital spaces. Leveraging artificial intelligence tools ethically and responsibly, they reversed the usual negative perception of technology.
They used AI not only to verify content but also to co-create counter-narratives and impactful awareness-raising videos. Through these participatory dynamics and collective reflection, the youth action reinforced the role of young people as active protagonists in building more inclusive and supportive communities.
The initiative brought together Social Work students from the Public University of Navarre, who brought their academic insights into the field after being trained by Coopera through the GET Teaching and Learning Units (TLUs).
The training placed particular emphasis on the units focused on migration and international inequalities, addressing issues related to social cohesion, coexistence and the impact of disinformation on the perception of certain groups, as well as how all of this affects everyday community life. By combining social research, critical thinking, and new technologies, the participants successfully designed an audiovisual campaign tailored to the social reality of their area—effectively debunking hoaxes and countering hate speech.
