International inequalities

Why it is time to discuss international inequalities in and out of school?

  • Impact on quality of life: International inequalities significantly affect access to a dignified life. The disparity in income and rights between being born in an African country versus a North American country can be greater than historical divides between aristocracy and peasantry. Understanding these disparities is crucial  to questioning contemporary injustices.
  • Source of global tensions: The widening gap between the richest minorities and the poorest majorities has far-reaching consequences, often leading to significant tensions across various regions. Addressing these inequalities is essential to prevent conflicts and promote global stability.
  • Multidimensional nature: Though often measured in economic terms, international inequalities intersect with many dimensions. They are central to understanding critical global issues such as intercontinental migration, the unequal impact of climate change, hunger geography, and disparities in education and healthcare access. Schools provide an ideal environment to explore these interconnected aspects comprehensively.
  • Need for awareness and action: Despite its significance, international inequality is an under-discussed and poorly understood issue. Educating students about its causes, nature, and effects is the first step toward cultural change given the direct and indirect impact on people. Schools play a pivotal role in facilitating this awareness and fostering informed global citizens.
