Galway ETSS Discusses Global Citizenship Education on GOCOM Radio’s Breakfast Show

Students at Galway Educate Together Secondary School (Galway ETSS) are showing how young people can play an active role in addressing global challenges. As a partner school of the Global Education Time (GET) Project, students at Galway ETSS have been exploring the project’s free educational resources and Youth Action opportunities.

Teacher, LeighAnn Mulrennan, and Leaving Cert student, Sonia, caught up with GOCOM Radio’s Breakfast Show to discuss the school’s involvement with Global Citizenship Education (GCE) and the importance of empowering young people to make a difference.

Bringing Global Challenges into the Classroom

GET provides free, curriculum-linked Teaching and Learning Units (TLUs) exploring four global challenges: climate change, migration, international inequalities and gender inequalities.

Designed to support subjects including Junior Cycle Geography, History and Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE), the TLUs help teachers introduce complex global issues in an accessible and engaging way.

Youth Actions for Global Change Across Ireland

Galway ETSS is one of 10 Irish schools participating in GET, which encourages students to turn their learning into meaningful action. As part of the school’s Youth Action work, Galway City Councillor Helen Ogbu, visited the school and spoke with students about the importance of community involvement, civic participation and using their voices to make a difference.

Other participating schools are also taking action. At Roscommon Community College, students explored the environmental and social impacts of fast fashion through a visit to APA’s charity shop in Athlone. Meanwhile, at Coláiste Muire, Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo, students developed a project entitled Mise agus Uisce (Me and Water), exploring the connection between access to clean water and migration.

Through its free TLUs and Youth Action opportunities, GET helps young people develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to become active citizens in their communities.
