Students at Galway ETSS recently welcomed Councillor Helen Ogbu for an engaging discussion on the four global challenges explored through the GET Project, International Inequalities Climate Change Migration and Gender Inequalities . During her visit, Helen encouraged students to take meaningful action on the issues that matter most to them, both globally and within their own local communities. Helen was accompanied by Ivana Bacik, leader of the Labour Party in Ireland, during the visit to Galway ETSS.

The event was organised by teachers Kevin Crowley and LeighAnn Mulrennan, alongside student Sonia from the 5th Year Politics and Society class. The visit formed part of the school’s Youth Action Project Based Learning (PBL) initiative, which saw students researching a range of pressing global issues using GET Project resources. Speaking about the experience, teacher LeighAnn Mulrennan reflected on the positive impact the visit had on students:
“Our students here at GETSS recently took part in a Youth Action Project Based Learning (PBL) day in March. Having Councillor Helen Ogbu visit our school to talk about how students can get involved in their communities to seek the change they wish to make was truly motivational! During this Youth Action PBL, students researched various global challenges, using the GET resources. Helen’s own personal journey to make change and her insight into how they can make their research and ideas a reality was an inspiration! We are excited to see the actions our students will take in the future!”

The visit highlighted the importance of youth engagement, civic participation, and empowering students to take action on the issues that affect both their futures and their communities.
Students had the opportunity to discuss their ideas, ask questions, and explore how young people can become active participants in shaping positive change in society. Helen shared insights from her own journey in public service and community activism, encouraging students to believe in the impact their voices and actions can have.

“It was a real pleasure to visit Galway ETSS and spend time with the students. I’d also like to extend my thanks to Kevin, Sonia, and all of the students for the opportunity to engage with them. I was genuinely impressed by their curiosity, insight, and the depth of their knowledge and interests. It made for a truly rewarding experience.”
