GET Teachers’ Meeting – Athlone, 6th March 2025

Sharing Experiences and Insights on Global Citizenship Education

On 6th March 2025, teachers from across Ireland gathered in Athlone for the first face-to-face GET Teachers’ Meeting. This was a fantastic opportunity for educators involved in piloting the Teaching and Learning Units (TLUs) to come together, share their experiences, and reflect on how these resources are shaping their classrooms.

The day featured engaging discussions, with teachers exchanging insights on what’s working well, the challenges they’ve encountered, and ways to enhance the TLUs further. These conversations were enriched by two thought-provoking presentations from guest speakers, offering valuable perspectives on key global issues.

Linda Ward from Charity Retail Ireland delivered a session on the circular economy in the context of climate change, highlighting the importance of sustainable consumption and the role of education in fostering responsible habits.

Nike Awoyemi and Marwa Zamir from the Irish Refugee Council led a workshop based on Tight Spaces, a resource designed to help students understand the experiences of refugee children in Ireland. Their session encouraged teachers to explore ways of fostering empathy and awareness in their classrooms.

Strengthening the GET Community

This meeting marked an important step in the GET project’s journey, strengthening the network of teachers dedicated to bringing Global Citizenship Education into their schools. By coming together, reflecting on their experiences, and engaging with experts, educators are building the confidence and knowledge needed to empower students to think critically about global challenges.

As the project continues, events like this will remain essential spaces for collaboration, learning, and inspiration. The insights gained from this meeting will help shape the next steps for the TLUs, ensuring they remain relevant, engaging, and impactful for both teachers and students alike.

Stay tuned for more updates on upcoming events and the ongoing development of the GET project!
